Instructor Attributes/Strengths: thoroughness; significant hands-on experience, professionalism

Until his retirement at the end of 2019, most of Roy’s operational experience and expertise came through his time working as an operator with the Township of Guelph/Eramosa. As is typically the case, when an operator is working in a smaller rural centre, they tend to become a lot more versatile as they are forced to deal with a broader spectrum of operational issues. They essentially have to become jack-of-all-trades types and as a result become good troubleshooters.

In the water distribution side, he developed specialties in storage tanks, flushing, and commissioning new water mains. In water treatment, his specialties became Chemical pumps, VU systems and treatment of ground water. In wastewater collection he became a go-to-guy for sewer flushing of mains, pumps and for his knowledge of manholes and the construction of sewer mains.

Like many instructors, Roy is a “people person” and gets fulfillment from the opportunity to pass on his experience to others. He feels natural and comfortable in the role of a teacher.
